Hedge Laying

Transforming everything from domestic garden hedges to field boundaries, I take pride in laying hedges that are not only visually appealing but also serve a practical purpose for years to come. Although my primary focus is in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, I have also worked on projects in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. Specialising in laying mixed native hedges in the Pembrokeshire style, I bring versatility to my work, having successfully laid hedges using a staked style, as well as laying formal beech, privet, and cherry laurel hedges.

How much does it cost to have a hedge laid?

The price can vary. The following list is not exhaustive but indicates some of the challenges that can increase the cost:

  • The condition of the hedge is a dominant factor. The longer since it was last laid, the more demanding it will be
  • Next to a road
  • Fences running alongside or, more challenging, in the hedge
  • Buildings or other obstacles next to or within 4m/12 feet of the hedge
  • Dominated by larger trees
  • Limited access to the hedge
  • Limited permission/space where to place brash removed from hedge

I offer a per-metre quote that will vary based on the challenges listed above.

Benefits of hedgelaying

Shelter for Crops and Livestock

Hedges create microclimates that can protect crops and livestock from extreme temperatures. They offer shade during hot days and act as a barrier against cold winds in winter

Soil Erosion Prevention

The dense structure of a well-laid hedge helps prevent soil erosion. This is crucial for maintaining soil fertility and preventing loss of valuable topsoil

Carbon Sequestration

Hedges play a role in carbon sequestration, capturing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This contributes to mitigating the effects of climate change

Enhanced Growth and Density

Hedgelaying encourages new growth and increases hedge density, creating a fuller and more robust barrier

Wildlife Sanctuary

The structured and layered nature of hedgelaying provides a haven for wildlife. Birds, insects, and small mammals find refuge in the dense foliage, contributing to a thriving ecosystem
